She makes dramas and documentaries that examine social issues, promote greater understanding between people from different cultures and backgrounds, and inspire compassionate action on our planet. Her work has screened at film festivals around the U.S. and internationally. Melissa is currently self-distributing her latest, 40 minute documentary, A Nightmare in Tuscany, about a trip she made to Italy to help her Mom heal from a near-fatal accident and their year-long journey to restore her mom’s independence. Melissa served as vice president and then chair of the McMinnville Short Film Festival (MSFF) from 2021-2023 and helped relaunch Oregon Doc Camp with Women in Film - Portland many years ago. She has been a juror for MSFF since 2021. Melissa grew up on a cattle and tobacco farm in Bourbon County, Ky. long before smoking was out and Bourbon was cool. She graduated from Miami University (Ohio) with honors in English Literature and went on to earn her M.A. in English Literature from Portland State University and a certificate in filmmaking from The Northwest Film Center. After three decades in Portland, Oregon that included working as an English professor for 20 years, studying film production, and countless outdoor adventures, she moved back to Kentucky with her husband, Dave, at the beginning of the pandemic to be closer to family.
